Green [Matcha] Tea
How we arrive at being ourselves fascinates me. Like where and when and how does something become our favorite thing?
Reflecting on how I came to love green tea (and now matcha tea) is because of a boy. Now, I found tea at some point and even started chugging more of it in college to get through the long nights and cold winters and springs in Chicago, but it was after trying to impress a boy that I began drinking my tea without sugar or honey or lemon. At first, the taste was too bitter without a touch of sweetness, but after a few dates of trying to be sophisticated, I began to really enjoy the taste of the sharp, nutty tea that always energizes me.
A cup of green tea was all I could afford most days when I was writing spec scripts at Insomnia Cafe back in the early 90s. I had enough for one cup of it and I would pour hot water over that used tea bag for the next six to eight hours until all I was drinking was tinted hot water. (A special thank you to the owners of that special place that allowed me to nurse a cup of green tea into dreams.)
Green tea became my superhero, when later as I was trying to run my first TV show, Girlfriends, I had to stop reaching for junk food at the witching hour. Instead, I substituted a hot cup of green tea to tap in and help me power through. Not only did I have more energy to get through the rewrites, but I also started to notice my sugar cravings had just disappeared. Aww, snap, I could be focused, healthy, warm, and hit my goal weight?
That was the time in my life I married GREEN TEA.
Me and GREEN TEA go everywhere together. I am known to always have a paper cup of it in the cupholder of my car or my hand as I walk through the doors of my offices, or on the set of my latest production, or in my favorite tea mug first thing in the morning, or during the late afternoon for that last push of creativity in the writer’s room.
I’ve been on a green tea drip since the day I tried to impress a boy. I lost touch with him, but I am forever grateful for that gift in our brief relationship. Drinking green tea and now matcha green tea— extra hot with oat milk (with almond milk if my trainer Louise Hazel is reading this)— is my staple.
It’s a perk that I treat myself to nearly every day… so I got a bunch of spots!

I’ve recently discovered green tea this year, matcha in particular and I am having a cup as I read your words and smile. What a difference it has made in my life, I am definitely more energetic and focused as I age gracefully. I since ditched my morning cup of joe. 🍵
I have a cup of hyperpremium matcha every morning – no alt/milk or sweetener. Just thick and foamy matcha, I whip up with an electric frother. I included “hyperpremium” b/c it really does make a difference. The quality is like no other; a vibrant green with flavors and umami out of this world. My go-to fav (for the last decade) is Breakaway Matcha in the Bay Area. Blend Hikari is the star of the hour… Check them out. And tell Eric “Tonya from Memphis” sent you!
I’ve been trying green tea more and more, which I first tried at Panera Bread. For awhile I’ve been drinking chamomile tea every morning. It has kept me leveled, fresh and prepared for my endeavors. Now I’m definitely going to add green matcha tea! Thank you 🙂

I have just recently become addicted to matcha tea!
I read this blog when you first began posting. I like the way you capture your love of something as simple as green tea. Yet, bringing life as to why makes me think of what I do on a day to day basis and the reason behind it. Thanks for making me think and discover my why. #thegreatstoryteller
